CELEBRATING THE VERY BEST OF CONTEMPORARY ARABIC FICTION
In November 2009, the International Prize for Arabic Fiction organised a workshop, or nadwa, for eight critically-acclaimed writers from Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The result was eight pieces of new writing, which have now been published by Saqi Books as Emerging Arab Voices.
To celebrate the UK publication of the book, the Mosaic Rooms will host a panel discussion to explore the creativity of this younger generation of Arab writers and the importance of translation in cross-cultural understanding. The speakers are three authorities on Arabic fiction: Peter Clark, coordinator of the nadwa and editor of Emerging Arab Voices; award-winning cultural journalist Maya Jaggi and Professor Paul Starkey, translator and Head of the Arabic Department at the University of Durham.
The panel will be chaired by Professor Yasir Suleiman, IPAF Trustee and Professor of Modern Arabic Studies at the University of Cambridge.
At a time of great upheaval across the Middle East, this volume of writing gives a fascinating insight into the themes that concern the younger generations of the Arab World.
