Director: Benny Brunner
Format: PAL
Studio: 2911 Foundation & Xela Films with Aljazeera English
Languages: English and Hebrew
Subtitles: English
Run Time: 57mins

The Great Book Robbery tells the story of 70,000 Palestinian books that were looted by the newly created state of Israel in 1948. The film interviews various story lines in a structure that is dramatically compelling and emotionally unsettling. The interviews center on eyewitness accounts and cultural critiques that place the book plunder affair in a larger historical-cutural context. In the process, new light is shed on the Palestinian tragedy of 1948 and the moralistic-heroic Israeli narrative of the 1948 war is being deconstructed.

The world is a battlefield. In this remarkable story from the frontlines of the undeclared battlefields of the War on Terror, journalist Jeremy Scahill documents the new paradigm of American war: fought far from any declared battlefield, by units that do not officially exist, in thousands of operations a month that are never publicly acknowledged.

Paperback: 140 pages
Publisher: Just World Books, 2013
ISBN: 978-1935982234
Product Dimensions: 21.6 x 0.9 x 28 cm

The Gaza Kitchen: A Palestinian Culinary Journey is a full-color cookbook which serves as an introduction to daily life in the embattled Gaza Strip: a visit to the intimate everyday spaces which never appear in the news. Over 120 fully kitchen-tested recipes present the enticingly herby, peppery, lemony tastes of Gazan home-cooking, largely unknown to outsiders, while conversations with cooks, farmers, economists and others provide an extraordinary glimpse into daily life for the 1.7 million inhabitants of the isolated enclave. Beautiful documentary photography of cooks, kitchens, farms and markets brings the territory and its people to life.

This two-day public forum will open wide discussions about society, culture and everyday life in Iraq. For decades, the Western media has shown these countries as threats to global peace – this event brings together specialists and professionals in mass media, the visual performing arts, cultural and social studies and history to examine Western representations of Iraq and Iran. More importantly, this forum offers diverse and alternative accounts of real life in Iraq and Iran today.

The meeting over two days includes invited speakers, roundtable discussions and sections for short papers on the four topics outlined above. Allotted discussion time will enable considerable interactive involvement from audiences throughout the event.

The event programme will include talks by Iraqi American artist Wafaa Bilal, BBC news journalist Rageh Omaar and art historian Kathy Battista and a panel, moderated by Anthony Downey of Ibraaz within the session WHERE TO NOW: Everyday Culture in Iraq Today, featuring panelists Adel Abidin, Rijin Sahakian, Omar Kholeif and Jananne Al-Ani. There will also be a lecture performance by the arts collective Slavs and Tatars followed by the launch of their new book Friendship of Nations: Polish Shi’ite Showbiz.
