Opium Brides

13/06/12

In Afghanistan, the world’s leading producer of opium, poppy farmers are being forced to sell their daughters to drug traffickers in order to pay their loans. How has the dreadful fate of these Opium Brides been sealed?

Following the stories of five families on the run from traffickers, acclaimed reporter Najibullah Quraishi journeys deep into the Afghan countryside to investigate the deadly bargain local farmers are being forced to make. The Afghan government’s eradication programme has destroyed many poppy fields but this has had a drastic collateral effect on farm families who borrowed money from traffickers to grow their crops. Once their crops are destroyed, they cannot pay these loans back. Facing death, they sell the only thing of value they now possess – their daughters. Girls as young as 6 are sold into sex-slavery in order to save their fathers.

From the producers of the multi-award-winning Dancing Boys of Afghanistan, this cutting-edge film exposes the abuse of young Afghan girls by drugs traffickers who are closely allied to the Taliban.

Screening on Wednesday 13th June, 6.30pm

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A involving the film makers and journalist Najibullah Quraishi.
