Kinsi Abdulleh presents award-winning shorts by prominent Somali film director and writer Abdulkadir Ahmed Said. Sea Shell (1990) and Tree of Life (1988) reflect on the impact of modernisation and industrialisation on the environment, lives and culture of Somalia. The screenings will be followed by a Q&A with Abdulkadir live from South Africa.

Sea Shell (25 min): A woman artist on a beach picks up a beautiful shell. She places it to her ear and listens, she hears the painful story about a young girl’s trauma in the nearby coastal village. She begins to understand the pain of the young girl – the pain caused by reckless actions of multinational corporations and its impact on the lives of a fishing village. This is a film dedicated to “all the victims of humanity’s lack of conscience”.

Tree of Life (24 min): Somewhere in Africa there is a Tree that regulates life, if it is destroyed then all life as we know it comes to an end. Xassan (Cilmi-Qori Sabriye) walks through his beautiful native forest in Somalia, selects a tree and begins to chop it down. Suddenly he finds himself in a desert. A previous winner of Best Film, International Short Film Competition category, at the Torino International Festival of Young Cinema, this film is an impassioned plea for conservation awareness in Africa.

Kinsi Abdulleh is a visual artist, editor and educator. She is the founder of NUMBI Arts, a London based non-profit Art Bureau – (Somali Film Arts & Culture -an open archive and ongoing forum for shared desporic experience), and the editor of bespoke literary arts magazine SCARF. Her work as an artist educator focuses on social justice, histories and women’s voices.
